Elements of Successful Novels: The First Two Pages
Elements of successful novels: the first two pages
Interesting tips from the University of Iowa Writing Festival in Iowa City.
Keeping in mind that the first few pages are crucial to keep the agent or editor reading, Gordon Mennenga of Coe College went into a bookstore, and picked up all of the bestselling and otherwise successful novels of the past year. Each of them had all of the following on the first two pages:
a sentence containing three commas, a one-word sentence, alliteration, food, body fluid--sweat, blood, tears, urine, reference to sex or death, something sinful or painful, a color, a physical feature, a personality trait, question mark, mention of nature, anything with a brand name, furniture, body part or parts, smell/odor, metaphor, each of which saves five p andages of description, city, state or street, walk/gesture/overbite/musculature.

If I Could Only Write One...or a Few
Today is the day in 1960 that Harper Lee's one and only published work, To Kill A Mockingbird, was released. It was a bestseller almost immediately and received a Pulitzer Prize less than a year later on May 1, 1960. Librarians have voted it the best novel of the twentieth century.
Also on this day, adult and children's book author E.B. White was born in 1899 in New York. Charlotte's Web, Trumpet of the Swan, and Stuart Little remain three of my favorite read-a-louds to school age children. They always seem to delight and never get old.
Birthday greeting should also go out to:
Jane Gardam (A Long Way from Verona)
Patricia Polacco (Chicken Sunday, Pink and Say, etc)
James Stevenson ( I Meant to Tell You)

Don't you wish you had a job like mine? All you have to do is think up a certain number of words! Plus, you can repeat words! And they don't even have to be true!
This quote is from one Dave Barry who is celebrating a birthday today. I started reading Dave a while ago and have never tired of reading his books and columns. I love his humor. I have not read any of his Peter and the Starcatchers books, but understand they are very good. I will put them on my ever-growing list of things to read. You can check out his website at :
