Holiday Meeting Locations

As many of you know, the holiday season is a high-traffic time for book stores and often requires us to hold our meetings at alternative locations (and occasionally even alternate days), in order to assure the proper atmosphere for critique. I would remind everyone to check the update emails and the locations listed on our facebook events for the correct meeting locations and times. If you are a first time attendee, please, do not hesitate to use the contact address listed on this blog to make certain that you are planning to be the at the right place at the right time.

Updated Bios

The first major task in updating our blog is nearly complete. We have posted the long-overdue bios of the very talented authors who have joined and become a regular part of our group over the past year. There will be a couple more bios posted in the near future, once I get the final word on them. I would like to take a moment, though, to thank the people featured on this blog and those who have not yet made it to our walls for making the Murfreesboro Writers Group the warm, stimulating environment we enjoy at every meeting.

Record Attendance

I would like to thank everyone who came to our last meeting (8/22). Because of you, we tied our group's record high attendance of thirteen members present. I would also like to congratulate everyone on a smoothly-run meeting. Despite the fact that almost everyone who came read, we still shared insightful critique AND kept the meeting within its scheduled period. Well done!

Updates Coming Soon

While there has been little activity on our blog of late, I would like to announce that we will soon be changing that. Over the next few weeks, we will be updating our blog with our group's revised rules, new and current member bios and pictures, and (God willing) upcoming events and new member-generated content. This should be an exciting period for the Murfreesboro Writers Group, and I invite any writers in the area to join with us and take part.

Meet Deb Simpson

Deb Simpson writes non-fiction, fiction and poetry. Her poems have been published in literary journals, newspapers, magazines and industry publications

She is a founding member of the MWG.

Meet David Fann!

Biography

I was born and raised in Murfreesboro, TN. I have enjoyed reading poetry for as long as I can remember. Although I have been writing for several years, I only started being serious about it a couple of years ago. My first book, Walking with God, a collection of original poems, was published in 2009. I am currently working on a second book of poems, as well as a short story. I still live in the middle TN area with my wife, Debbie, and our two adopted sons. My literary influences include Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, and William Blake.

Meet Pete McNally--in his own words....

I was born in Boston. We moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee when I was three. I attended the University of Chattanooga and graduated from UT Knoxville; moved to Nashville in 1978 to work for the Health Department as a systems analyst; earned secondary math teaching certification at Tennessee State University; taught math at Spencer Youth Center in Nashville and at John Carroll High School in Birmingham Alabama; returned to Nashville to analyze computer systems for Human Services; studied English at MTSU. Currently my wife, Kathy, and I live in Smyrna where I enjoy reading, movies, music and writing short works. I enjoy the Murfreesboro Writers Group; the members have improved my writing and inspired me.

Robert (Bob) Michael

Robert Michael was a Professor Emeritus of European History at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where he taught the Holocaust. Dr. Michael published poetry and more than 50 articles and eleven books.

He also taught at Central European University in Budapest, Inter-American University in Puerto Rico, and lectured at the University of Vienna, the Ateneo Veneto and University of Venice, University of South Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University, Ringling College of Art and Design, Florida State University, and Middle Tennessee State University.

He co-founded, along with his wife Susan, the Murfreesboro Writers Group.

Meet June Hall McCash -Georgia Author of the Year-1st Novel!

June Hall McCash writes fiction, nonfiction and poetry. She is the author, co-author, or editor of seven books, including Almost To Eden, Jekyll Island’s Early Years, The Life of Saint Audrey, The Jekyll Island Cottage Colony, The Cultural Patronage of Medieval Women, The Jekyll Island Club, and Love’s Fools. June’s poetry and articles have been published in numerous magazines and journals. She was recently named Georgia Author of the Year for her first novel, Almost to Eden.

She holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Emory University. For many years she taught French and humanities at Middle Tennessee State University, where she served as the founding director of the Honors Program (now Honors College) and chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. She is now a full time writer dividing her time between Tennessee, where much of her family lives, and Jekyll Island, Georgia, where she owns a cottage and does much of her writing.

June is a member of the Tennessee Writers Association and a founding member of the Murfreesboro Writers Group. She is also a member of the Georgia Writers Association. She has appeared in three A&E film documentaries and on “Good Morning America.” She is also a frequent speaker, having done presentations for the Georgia Humanities Council, various historical societies, libraries, and universities, as well as the Georgia Center for the Book, the Georgia Library Association, the Jekyll Island Museum, and the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.

She has been a fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council of Education as well as the recipient of her university's Distinguished Research Award (1996) and Career Achievement Award (2003) along with Agnes Scott College's Outstanding Alumna Award (1996). She has served as chair of Humanities Tennessee and trustee of the Jekyll Island Foundation. At present she is completing her second novel and is also about to publish a new nonfiction work. She also continues to write poetry.

William Visher, Visher Ink

William Visher is the owner and operator of Visher Ink Publishing, a business that specializes in all types of freelance writing services.

William earned his B.S. (Bachelor of Science) degree in Human Ecology: Early Childhood Education: PreK-4 from UTC (Go Mocs!). He went on to get a M.Ed. (Master of Education) in Early Childhood Education from the University of West Georgia and an Ed.S. (Education Specialist) in Curriculum and Instruction from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. He is also a certified reading specialist.

He taught developmental writing at Dalton State College and now does freelance writing from his home in Murfreesboro.

Meet Ken Vanderpool

Ken Vanderpool is a life-long fan of Crime and Thriller fiction who began to write in 2005, following an eye-opening medical procedure and an intimate encounter with his mortality.

Ken graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with his degree in Psychology and Sociology and a focus on Criminology. He has also graduated from the Metropolitan Nashville Citizen Police Academy and the Writer’s Police Academy in Greensboro, NC.

Ken’s first novel, WHEN THE MUSIC DIES will be released in November 2012, and he is currently at work on his second novel in the Music City Murders series, FACE THE MUSIC.

He has spent his entire life in Nashville and Middle Tennessee and proudly professes, “There is no better place on this earth.” Ken currently lives near Nashville in Murfreesboro, TN with his wife Sandra and their Cairn Terrier-ist, Molly.
